Marathon Off-Road ATV/Motorcycle Club along with Wausau Motorsports will be hosting a Sound Check/Testing Day on Lake Wausau the Saturday after Christmas (Dec 26).
We have aquired a Radio Shack sound meter similar to the one to be used at C.W.I.R.A. events in 2004 and will be giving informal sound checks to anyone requesting them. If the ice conditions on Lake Wausau do not allow us to get out on the ice we will move to Wausau Motorsports and conduct the sound checks there.
Remember that in 2004 ALL RACERS will have to pass 105db! This includes ATV's AND BIKES!

At this time no. BUT remember that the state WILL be going to a 96db law in the near future. Untill we know exactly how this impacts racing this issue is subject to change.

It's Saturday the 27th. I'm not only slow I can't read either.........
There's a lot of talk going on BUT:
The C.W.I.R.A. rule is 105db(a) at 20" behind and a 45 degree angle from the horizontal centerline of the exhaust outlet. The testing rpm is 3000 at no load. This rule is for all racers including bikes and quads. The specified testing device is the Radio Shack that sells for about $50. Officially the rule allows for a 1-week grace period for passing the rule.
That's the info I gathered from the Fall meeting and conversations with Larry Strangfeld and Rick LaRock.
[glow=red,2,300]Now in the real world.....[/glow] This will be a "learning curve" for all of us. Example: The wind pushes ALL the readings up or down a few points - that will be figured in. Nobody knows how the ice/snow conditions will affect readings from week to week. Maybe temperature too - who knows? Last Sunday the DNR had a similar testing session near Lake Wisconsin using the "real" testing gear (the stuff the wardens will be using to enforce 96db) and found some real surprising results. Like some mod 4-strokes that passed 96 and near stock 2-strokes that didn't!
The Bottom Line: If you are running near open pipes on a thumper you will fail. If you haven't packed your 2-stroke silencer since last year you'll probably fail as well. It is not if but when the new Wisconsin law kicks in we will all have to live with 96db BUT it's starting to look like OUR 105db and THEIR 96db are gonna be real close. And by close I mean that it takes the threat of sound being used to shut down our races out of the direct spotlight. The testing of sound has so many variables that yes, 105 and 96 can mean the same thing. That's what law enforcement has had to deal with over the years.
Just remember that this is all just a step - it's just like learning to ride all over again.

Just to clarify at present there are no rules/laws/whatever at the STATE level about bikes. The new stuff proposed for the state is "ATV only".
Without getting into the whole bikes/quads screwing we are all getting (bikes are locked out of the trails and quad programs lose potential bike $$$$) any lake association/county/city/forrest management unit and impose any regulation they want on ALL vehicles. This is one of the main reasons the CWIRA is going to the sound rule. [glow=red,2,300]As they say, it's better to be the hammer than the nail.[/glow]If groups like the CWIRA and SWIRA take actions like this it really does carry a lot of weight and often can prevent more restrictive crap by those who may not want us arround......

The location we will be using is the bay North of Gulivers Landing, just off "Snake Bridge" or County N (for you non-locals). As of Dec. 18th there is 7+" so it should be OK on the 27th. If you arrive via I-39/US-51 take the County NN exit to the East, then North at the stop sign. If Ice or other conditions prevent us from going out on the lake it will move to Wausau Motorsports - so then it would be turn right at the stop sign. I'll post any updates here or just call me at the store 715-355-6120 or 800-550-6120 x123. MotoBill

Sunday Dec 21, 1pm, 40 degrees, snow covered ice using Radio Shack meeter on "a" scale, 20" at 45* horizontal from exhaust outlet.
'89 Banshee, Bills Pipes/silencers: 100-101dba @ 3000rpm
'96(?) Banshee TRP Pipes/silencers: 101dba @3000rpm +-500
'00(?) TRX400 White Bros Silencer: 100dba @3000rpm +-500
(?) TRX400 (?) silencer: 102dba @3000rpm +-500
'98 YZ400f Dr. D Pipe/silencer: 100-101dba @3000rpm +-500
Only one of the bikes tested (the '89 Banshee) had a tach so we did our best guess at 3000rpm. Just to be on the safe side we also ran the R's up on each machine to 105dba (the C.W.I.R.A. limit). The 4-strokes needed much more R's (it seemed) to hit 105.

Motobill,
Did you have any set-ups that didn't pass? Just to give us an idea of what we should probably stay away from so we don't waste our money.
