At the tender age of 36 I decided I had better give racing a try. I had been riding with some young guys from work at a local gravel pit, and we were doing jumps and the usual things you'd expect at a gravel pit with a quad......and this stuff seemed to be way funner than trail riding. Some of the guys said they were planning on racing, so I thought I might give it a try too.
There was a Quad Series race at Gravity Park in Chilton and I had been there watching mx before, so I thought I might as well do it. I showed up and dang near chickened out when I went to sign up because it seemed like there was a million people there and they were all about 20 years old. I was starting to think maybe I was crazy for wanting to do this. But, I figured I had hauled the quad there, so I might as well do it. Well, I almost missed my first moto because they changed the class order at the last minute, and I didn't hear the announcement. Thanks to some help from Bob Paulsen, I managed to get me and my quad to the line in time. After the gate dropped, it's all a blurr. I had a stock z-400. If you know gravity park, you know it has some pretty good jumps. I gave it all I had, but that stock suspension wasn't up to the task. A good rider could probably take a stock z400 around there with no trouble, but with my limited experience, I ended up breaking my bearing carrier. I also ended up with a sprained ankle. I've been hooked on MX ever since. That was last July. I've only been in about a dozen races so far and it gets funner all the time. I just can't wait for the next one. This has got to be the best sport ever invented!
